Do you love working outdoors?
Would you like to be your own boss and run your own small business?
How about animals – do you like horses?
Got a strong back and a firm grip?
Want to make about $70K a year?
Then maybe a farrier career is for you!
I recently had the privilege of interviewing Doug Butler, PhD, CJF, FWCF and co-owner of the Butler Professional Farrier School. He generously shared his time to describe the benefits of being a farrier and the type of person who is most successful at the craft.

Here’s just some of what I learned from Doug:
- A good farrier is worth his or her weight in gold. If you know people who have horses, ask them about the importance of having a skilled and reliable farrier!
- Farrier’s come in all shapes, sizes, genders and ages. But good farriers have sound character and a good work ethic.
- Farriers are small business owners. Taking care of a horses foot is just one part of the equation – the other part is keeping happy customers and having good business “horse sense”.
- You can start a farrier career at any time, although you’ll want to coordinate your plans with the Butler Professional Farrier School class schedule! (subtle plug for Doug’s school)
- Some people take farrier and horseshoeing training so they can care for their own horses too!

And if this career option isn’t for you…well, then…just tell a friend!
